When Your Pet Needs a Same-Day Appointment

While some pet problems can wait a day or two, others require more immediate attention. Here are some common reasons we recommend calling us right away:

Sudden changes in behavior or activity

If your normally active dog won’t get off the bed, or your playful cat is hiding and growling when touched, something is up. Sudden lethargy, disorientation, or collapsing can be signs of serious illness.

Persistent vomiting or diarrhea

One off incident isn’t always cause for panic, but repeated vomiting or diarrhea (especially with blood or signs of dehydration) should be addressed sooner rather than later.

Difficulty breathing or excessive coughing

Labored breathing, choking, wheezing, or nonstop coughing are always considered urgent—and need to be seen as soon as possible.

Eye injuries or sudden vision changes

If your pet’s eye is red, swollen, or has sudden cloudiness, or if they appear to be bumping into things or seem disoriented, don’t wait. Eye conditions can progress quickly and sometimes result in permanent damage if untreated.

Injuries or trauma

Even if your pet seems “okay” after a fall, hit by car, or fight with another animal, internal injuries can be life-threatening and aren’t always visible.

Suspected toxin ingestion

If you think your pet got into chocolate, grapes, medications, or household chemicals, call us right away. Some toxins don’t show symptoms for hours—but early intervention can be lifesaving.

Unusual swelling, bloating, or pain

Bloat (especially in large-breed dogs) is a true emergency. Signs include a swollen belly, unproductive vomiting, and restlessness. Any unexplained swelling or signs of pain should be examined as soon as possible.

Trouble urinating or defecating

Straining, frequent attempts to urinate with no success, or bloody urine can indicate a blockage or infection—and that’s not something you want to let wait.

If you’re debating whether something can wait until tomorrow—or if it’s something your pet needs help with now—just give us a call. Our team is happy to talk through your concerns and help you determine the best next steps.

After-Hours Emergency Care

When an emergency occurs outside of our regular hours, we partner with the Veterinary Emergency Referral Center (VERC) in Norman, OK, to ensure your pet gets the care they need. VERC is staffed with veterinary specialists who are available for emergency services after business hours.
